K. Faltaits: "How Asia Minor Perished"

A commemorative edition by the Faltaits Museum on the 100 year anniversary since the Asia Minor Catastrophe

How did we get from the frantic enthusiasm of the military campaign for the liberation of our enslaved brothers in Asia Minor and the " Megali Idea," to the lamentation of the destruction of Smyrna and the final loss of Eastern Thrace?

Why was the suffering endured by the local Greek populations unable to move the Greek governments and citizens?

To commemorate the sad the massacre and catastrophe of the Hellenism in Asia Minor, the Faltaits Museum has published the book titled "How Asia Minor Perished," which recounts the Asia Minor Campaign and Catastrophe through the publications, notes and diary of the journalist Konstantinos Faltaits.

In over 500 pages, and prefaced by the historian, PhD in Modern History of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Mr. Vlassis Agtzides, the Museum publishes for the first time and in chronological order:

-all of K. Faltaits’s (1891-1944) reports from the area of Nicomedia, when he followed the movements of the 3rd Army Corps (March 1921-November 1921) as the war correspondent for the newspaper "Embros"

- testimonies he collected from survivors of the massacres carried out in the area by Mustafa Kemal’s irregular brigands (Çetes). Part of this material was published in 1921 in his book "These are the Turks – Narratives of the Nicomedia massacres"

-unknown information about what was going on behind the media and political scenes in Athens during the last days leading to the Great Catastrophe of Smyrna, through his personal diary (late August-early September 1922)

- Faltaits’ reports for the newspaper "Embros" regarding the exchange of populations and the cession of Greek Thrace to Turkey (26 September-9 October 1922)

By following the journey of K. Faltaits from Bursa in March 1921 to Trhace in October 1922, and reading through the wealth of information provided in his reports, notes and journals, the reader of this book will gain valuable insights into the Asia Minor Catastrophe and how Asia Minor ultimately perished
